Mrs. Kansas 2017

Mrs. Kansas America 2017 is Cassie Hickel. She comes from Hays, KS, where she lives with her husband Mason, and their three girls, Lydia, Aubrey, and Eleanor. Cassie is currently studying for nursing school and substitute teaches throughout the Hays school district part-time during the week along with helping others achieve their health and wellness goals through their AdvoCare business the past six years. The Hickel family enjoys spending time outside, traveling, and trying new foods at all the different places they visit.

In December of 2016, Cassie became a living kidney donor to Richard Klim of Bettendorf, Iowa. She first heard his story through a mutual friend on Facebook, and they began testing in the summer of 2016. They found that, although they weren’t blood-related, they were a 98% match. After seeing the impact the donation had on not only Rich’s life but his family’s as well, Cassie began to look for ways to share the importance of kidney health and the need for living donors. She found the Mrs. Kansas America pageant and began working with the National Kidney Foundation, the Midwest Transplant Network, and Save A Life, KS, on her journey to become Mrs. Kansas. The past eight months have been filled with sharing her story, spreading the message of the importance of kidney health, raising awareness for the need of kidney donors, and meeting incredible individuals who have Shared their Spare and had an impact on someone else’s life. The sacrifice on the part of the donor is small beyond the six weeks of recovery, but the impact on the recipient lasts a lifetime!
